BOK FOOTBALL

The year is 1962, and Tom DeFelice is starting quarterback for West Catholic’s football team in the City Title contest against South Philadelphia High School. The game ended in a thrilling 20-20 tie. The standout who went on to play for Temple University has since made his mark in the Philadelphia Public League coaching ranks, compiling more than 100 wins and an endless list of Division titles at Bok Tech. The latest came following Saturday’s convincing 32-12 victory over Franklin, giving his Wildcats the 2008 Public League District 12 Class AA championship.

Now, with Catholic League teams being Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association members, DeFelice gets his chance to face his alma mater for the PIAA District 12 Class AA crown. West Catholic advanced with a 56-7 victory over Archbishop Carroll in its title contest. The West Philadelphia squad is averaging more than 48 points per game, while Bok is scoring 31.6. These two high-scoring offenses will go head-to-head 2 p.m. Nov. 8 at 10th and Bigler streets for the city’s Class AA crown and a spot in the PIAA state playoffs.

NEUMANN-GORETTI SOCCER

The Neumann-Goretti girls’ soccer team finished the season 10-4-1 overall and 8-3-1 in Philadelphia Catholic League Blue Division play. The Saints finished third in the standings, but missed the playoffs by one point as only the top two finishers made the cut. Coach Jim McBride said he believes this marks the best record in program history.

The team also had eight players named to Blue Division All-Catholic teams. Forwards Tonia Russo and Nica Meccariello were First Team selections, while midfielders Adriana Sciascia and Laura Politto earned Second Team recognition along with sweeper Nicole McAfee. On the third team, defenders Gabriela Mastero and Melanie Carmichael, as well as goalie Sara Kelly, represent the South Philly squad. The players will be honored at the Philadelphia All-Catholic banquet in February.
