ALL-CATHOLIC HONORS

Neumann-Goretti’s Lou Spadaccini won his second Blue Division Coach of the Year award. Senior Mike “Zoom” Zolk won co-MVP honors and placed on the First-Team All-Catholic squad as an infielder. Junior Joe Gorman earned First-Team honors as an outfielder and a pitcher. Junior outfielder Jimmy Kerrigan also appeared on the First-Team. Junior infielder Marty Venafro and senior designated hitter John Snyder nabbed Second-Team placements.

BATTLE OF BROTHERLY LOVE III RECAP

Neumann-Goretti High School hosted last weekend’s four contests featuring teams from North, South and West Philadelphia and a squad from composed of players from the surrounding counties. In Saturday’s semifinals, the stacked North Philly team brushed aside the County team 99-96. The West Philly bunch downed South Philly, last year’s champs, 125-106. In Sunday’s consolation game, County erased a huge deficit to top South Philly 104-99. North Philly claimed its first trophy right after, beating West Philly 123-120 in overtime. Neumann-Goretti freshman guard Ja’Quan Newton and sophomore forward John Davis made the All-Tournament team, as did former Southern standout Deshon Minnis.

BUTLER ALL-CITY CLASSIC

The ninth annual Rasual Butler All-City Classic, named in honor of the Point Breeze native and Chicago Bulls swingman occurs 5 p.m. June 9 at Ben Franklin High School, 550 N. Broad St. The game features the top freshmen, sophomore and junior basketball players, including many with local ties. Tickets are $10. E-mail Charles Monroe, cmonroe1@hotmail.com.

CITY ALL-STAR FOOTBALL CLASSIC

Saturday’s 37th annual City All-Star Football Classic at Lincoln Financial Field pitted the Public team against the Non-Public squad. The former emerged with a 30-20 victory. Bok’s Khalil Neal contributed seven tackles to the winning cause.

Neumann-Goretti seniors Sal DiFrancesco, an offensive lineman from the 2900 block of South Juniper Street and tight end and defensive lineman Chad McPherson of Southwest Philadelphia represented the Non-Public team. McPherson finished with four tackles.

DISTRICT XII TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association held the District XII Track and Field Championships May 18 to 19 at Germantown and Northeast high schools. Two students from Class AA’s Edward Bok Technical School, 1901 S. Ninth St., placed favorably in the results. Senior Joshua Santiago placed first in the long jump and triple jump while classmate Bryan Henderson placed third in the 300-meter hurdles.

EYP CHESS TOURNAMENT

The Philadelphia Eagles hosted the eighth annual Eagles Youth Partnership Chess Tournament, which took place May 18 at Lincoln Financial Field. More than 200 of Philadelphia’s top chess-playing students participated in the competition. In the High School non-rated section, The Academy at Palumbo, coached by Ed Myers, Butch Blocker, and Frank Fritz, placed third in the team awards. F.A. Bregy School, coached by Karen O’Hara, won first place in team awards in the middle school non-rated section.

JUNIOR TEAM TENNIS LEAGUE AND LADIES’ BEGINNER LEAGUE

The South Philadelphia Tennis Association will hold a USTA Junior Team Tennis League 2:30 to 5 p.m. Saturdays at Barry Playground, 18th and Johnston streets, through June 11. The $50 league fee includes instruction and team matches. Participants will receive a T-shirt, a racket, a one-year subscription to Tennis Magazine and a pizza party. League champions will advance to USTA playoffs. Association is also looking for ladies interested in a beginners’ league. Dates and times will depend on interested parties’ availability. NEUMANN-GORETTI YOUTH FOOTBALL CAMP

Neumann-Goretti is hosting its first annual youth football camp for sixth through eighth graders 9 a.m. to noon June 27 to 30 at 26th and Moore streets. This non-contact camp will introduce participants to offense, defense and special teams. Registration ends June 1. There is a $25 registration fee. Contact C.J. Szydlik, 215-858-9112.

Fall outdoor soccer registrations are now being accepted for the league which begins Sept. 10. Age divisions are: 4 to 6; 7 to 8; 9 to 10; 11 to 13; and 14 to 17. Register 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays or noon to 2 p.m. Saturdays at SEYAA, Seventh and Bigler streets. Previous participants will receive a registration packet in the mail.
