MIXED SOFTBALL LEAGUE

PALUMBO CHESS UPDATE

The chess team at The Academy at Palumbo, 1100 Catharine St., lost the Philadelphia Scholastic Chess League March 10, falling to Masterman High School at Citizens Bank Park. The five-match final ended 54-26 in Masterman’s favor, with Palumbo freshman John “Alex” Wallace scoring the team’s lone win and fellow frosh Angelo Dellamargio earning a tie.

PHILLY GIRLS GOT GAME

The Philly Girls Got Game spring clinic for ages 8 to 13 is taking place 10 a.m. to noon April 10 at Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St.  Participants will learn drills and skills with Philadelphia’s Division I college coaches and teams. Visit www.phillygirlsgotgame.com to register.

PIAA PLAYOFFS

All three local schools advanced in opening-round action fo the PIAA asketball playoffs. Friday, the defending Class AAA champion Neumann-Goretti Saints crushed Annville-Cleona, 62-34. John Davis finished with a game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds while Lamin Fulton chipped in 10 points and six assists. The Saints have since advanced to tomorrow night’s quarterfinal against Octorara, who is the No. 1 seed out of District 1. Time and location were not available at press time.

The Prep Charter girls’ basketball team won its first-ever state tournament contest Saturday with a 43-31 victory over St. Basil’s Academy. Tiffany Johnson and Kahleah Copper combined for 35 points. The boys opened states with a 40-36 win over Salisbury Townnship, Marc Wilmer and Abraham Massaley chipped in 13 points apiece for the Huskies.

ROOKIE RUGBY

Murphy Rec Center, Fourth and Shunk streets, is hosting flag rugby for sixth- to eighth-grade boys and girls ages 12 to 14. All teams will be invited to attend and wear their uniforms to the USA Collegiate Sevens Rugby Championship at Chester’s PPL Park. Call 215-685-1874.

Registration is being accepted for T-ball, baseball and girls softball. The season begins April 16. The age divisions for baseball are: 4 to 6 (T-ball); 7 to 8 (pitching machine); 8 to 10 and 10 to 12 (live pitch); 13 to 15 and 16 to 19 (Babe Ruth).

The ages for girls’ softball are 10 to 12 and 12 to 14. Register at the Taggart School gym, Fifth and Porter streets 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays or print a registration packet from seyaa.com.
