Trojan Pinata

A multicolored donkey — all 61 feet of it — that sat at Broad Street and Washington Avenue since Nov. 2 was finally smashed open early last week. Warring soldiers didn’t fly out like in Homer’s "Iliad," but 8,000 pounds of candy did. The giant pinata was created to set a Guinness World Record — which it did for Largest Pinata. Attracting a lot of attention when it first appeared for a Carnival Cruise Line TV commercial, the plan to crack it open via a wrecking ball was scrapped when too many people showed up. Nov. 9 saw the rain of sweets with 300 paid actors on hand and the candy set to be sent to several charities, including Philabundance, YMCA and the Ronald McDonald House.
