A downstream outlook

To the Editor:

Summer is finally here! With that comes the great pleasure of recreation along the region’s great waterways. From trips to the Jersey Shore or to a local swimming hole, to kayaking and canoeing on winding rivers and streams that crisscross Pennsylvania—today, we are lucky to have countless places to visit on these sunny days.

Unfortunately, nearly a decade ago polluters carved out loopholes in the Clean Water Act, leaving many miles of the creeks and streams we love in Pennsylvania vulnerable to more pollution.

The good news is that with the Clean Water Rule, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is moving ahead with restoring much-needed protections to small streams, creeks, and wetlands.

We need U.S. Senator Bob Casey to support the EPA’s Clean Water Rule and get it over the finish line: someone always lives downstream and we have a responsibility to protect these places for our communities and theirs.
