A man remains hospitalized with a bullet wound after allegedly attacking a police officer and trying to disarm him Tuesday night.

At about 6:30 p.m., 1st District police responded to a call of a person screaming on the 2600 block of South Bouvier Street. Upon arrival, police found Frank Dukes, of that block, tossing items out of his second-story window, Lt. Frank Vanore of the Police Public Affairs Unit said. Dukes allegedly walked outside and struck one of the cops in the face, causing the latter to hit the ground. The officer’s partner responded by spraying Dukes with Mace, but the struggle continued and the 42-year-old allegedly tried to grab the officer’s gun. During that struggle, the cop’s weapon discharged and struck Dukes in the side, Vanore said.

Dukes was transported to Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he remained as of Wednesday afternoon in stable condition. One officer also was taken to HUP for abrasions to his face, while the other did not sustain any injuries, Vanore said.

Dukes, who has prior arrests that include burglary, drug possession and eluding police, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and related offences.

Bullet to the chest

A man was shot in the chest after refusing an order to get on the ground by a trio of muggers — one of which was holding a gun on him.

The three approached the 20-year-old and, after not obliging the armed offender, the other two tried to dig through his pockets, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The victim tried to get away, but the gunman hit him in the head with the gun and fired a small-caliber bullet from the silver weapon before the three fled south on foot on Ninth Street.

The bullet lodged just below the skin, but the victim is in stable condition, Tolliver said.

The gunman was described as black, 5-foot-8, age 18 to 20, thin and wearing a black hoody and blue jeans; the first accomplice was described as black, 5-foot-6, age 18 to 20, thin and wearing a gray hoody and blue jeans, while the second man was said to be Hispanic, 6 foot, age 18 to 20 with a goatee and wearing a gray hoody and blue jeans.

Teen charged with attempted murder

A teen was arrested Friday for a January shooting near a market on the 2800 block of Snyder Avenue.

After a warrant went out for his arrest, Raheem Zachary, 19, of the 2600 block of Jackson Street, was charged with attempted murder, robbery, aggravated assault and other offenses 9 p.m. April 3 on the 2100 block of Passyunk Avenue, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said.

Jan. 25 at about 12:30 p.m., the 20-year-old victim was allegedly shot by Zachary in what appeared to be a robbery setup.

While leaving the 28th Street Supermarket, a man approached the victim and asked for change, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The man then walked south alongside the victim on 28th Street toward Cantrell Street. When the two reached Cantrell, Zachary, who the victim recognized from the neighborhood, stepped from around the corner with a gun in his jacket sleeve and said, "you know what it is," Tolliver said.

Realizing he was being robbed, the victim punched the man who asked for money while Zachary allegedly retaliated by pistol-whipping the victim and knocking him to the ground. When the victim tried to get up, Zachary allegedly fired one shot that hit the man in his left wrist, Tolliver said. When he did get up to make his escape north on 28th, Zachary allegedly continued to fire at the victim, but did not strike him.

The man who had asked for money was described as wearing a gray coat over a black-hooded sweatshirt. He is still at large and has not been identified.

Not one thin dime

A man handed a Sovereign Bank teller a demand note Monday, but fled without a dime when an alarm was sounded.

The man walked into the financial institution at 2701 S. 10th St. at about 4 p.m. with a note that said, "Don’t pull any alarms. I have a gun," Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Ignoring the warning, the teller hit the silent alarm and the suspect, aware what was going on when the teller stepped away from the window, grabbed his note and fled on foot, going south on 10th.

The offender was described as white, age 20 to 25, 190 pounds with a medium build and wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, black gloves and sunglasses.

Guilty plea in cop’s shooting

Two Camden, N.J., men pled guilty this week to charges stemming from a robbery-turned-shooting last summer that included a 3rd District officer taking a bullet in the left shoulder.

Rakin Thabit, 43, pled guilty to criminal attempted murder in the first degree, while he and Jonathan Massa, 23, both pled guilty to possession of a firearm, robbery and criminal conspiracy.

Plainclothes officers Mark Uffelman and David McAndrews, also of the 3rd District, were assisting homicide detectives in the investigation of the June 15 slaying of Beau Zabel at Eighth and Ellsworth streets. The cops spotted the duo robbing a man at Eighth and Fitzwater streets at about 1:30 a.m. June 24, police said at the time. When they approached the scene, the attempted muggers ran off in separate directions.

Uffelman, 52 at the time, chased Thabit south on Eighth, where the latter turned and fired four to five rounds with one hitting the officer, Lt. Frank Vanore of the Police Public Affairs Unit said last year. The wounded cop continued the pursuit to the 800 block of Mildred Street, where Thabit was arrested and his revolver recovered.

McAndrews arrested Massa after a brief foot chase that ended at Eighth and Christian streets. A loaded 9mm handgun was recovered at the time.

Sentencing for Thabit and Massa is scheduled for 9 a.m. May 28.

Nickname starts investigation

After leaving a bar Wednesday, a man was mugged at gunpoint by another he knew only as "Bi."

The victim departed Fireside Tavern, 2701 S. Marshall St., at about 1:05 a.m. when Charles Waters and Paul Shiver, aka Paul Dennis, both 29, allegedly grabbed him, spun him around and pointed a gun in his face on the 2700 block of Fairhill Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The man handed over his wallet, which contained $275, credit cards and ID.

After an investigation, police discovered Waters’ real name and arrested him at 10:30 p.m. April 1 on the 600 block of Oregon Avenue, while Shiver was arrested at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Eighth and Race streets, Tolliver said.

Waters, of the 2500 block of Marshall, and Shiver, of the 2000 block of South Norwood Street, were charged with robbery, theft, firearm violations and related offenses.

Anderson, 32, allegedly reached into the man’s pockets and took $800 and a set of keys, as well as $500 from under a bedroom dresser, before fleeing the home on foot in an unknown direction.

The victim knew a relative of the man he believed had attacked him. The woman, who is the victim’s neighbor, identified Anderson.

Anderson was charged with aggravated assault, robbery, burglary and related offenses.

A man on a bike stopped another in his tracks and ordered him to the ground before mugging and threatening him March 28.

The 37-year-old victim was walking on the 1500 block of Jackson Street at about 10:15 p.m. when a man pulled up and pulled out a gray revolver, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. While facedown, the gunman threatened to shoot and directed an accomplice to pad down their victim.

The victim was not injured in the mugging, but he was stripped of his wallet, keys and cellphone by the duo who fled north on their bikes on the 2100 block of Mole Street.

The gunman was described as black, age 20, 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds with a dark complexion and short hair with sideburns and wearing a gray-hooded sweatshirt with horizontal stitching across the chest.
