On Jeaream Newman’s alleged fifth attempt at breaking into residents’ homes by unlocking doors via their mail slots, he was caught after police found evidence linking him to his latest Passyunk Square burglary.

Police spotted Newman on the 1700 block of Ellsworth Street shortly after he is believed to have swiped a MacBook Pro off of the bedroom floor of a 28-year-old woman inside her home on the 1000 block of Fernon Street at 5:35 a.m. Friday, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He is believed to have opened the front door via the mail slot, but the resident woke up as he was standing in her doorway. He fled with the laptop, but left evidence leading police to him.

Upon searching Newman’s home, authorities located the stolen laptop. With further investigation, he also was linked to an attempted burglary on the 1000 block of Cross Street April 17 and 1100 block Cantrell Street April 22, as well as a burglary on the 700 block of Mountain Street April 17 and on the 1900 block of South Sartain Street April 22, Tolliver said. All of the break-ins occurred between 3 and 6:05 a.m.

Newman was charged with five counts of trespassing, criminal mischief, theft and receiving stolen property; three counts of burglary; and two counts of attempted burglary, according to court records. He also was charged with an unrelated theft Friday. He previously pled guilty to a burglary in 2006.
