As part of Mayor Michael Nutter’s Greenworks initiative to plant 300,000 new trees in Philadelphia by 2015, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation now is leading the TreePhilly campaign.

The goal of the initiative, which Wells Fargo has funded with $75,000, is to engage Philadelphia property owners, businesses and neighborhood residents to plant and maintain trees on private and public property, which will improve communities and invest in the city’s future.

TreePhilly will team up with neighborhood groups to do street tree surveying in order to determine where new trees can be planted and where dead trees and stumps need to be removed. Trees requested by March 31 may be picked up at South Philly’s Yard Tree Giveaway at Mifflin Square Park, 500 Wolf St., 4 to 7 p.m. April 27 and 1 to 4 p.m. April 28.

“Our city will be healthier, safer and more attractive as a result of the trees we plant through this program,” Nutter said.
