A Point Breeze man is behind bars for allegedly striking another male with a shovel on Saturday.

At 8:30 p.m., the complainant stated he became the victim of a blow from the tool while on the 2200 block of Titan Street. He revealed, according to Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division, that he was outside a residence when the supposed offender, who is the ex-husband of his present girlfriend, approached him to incite an argument about his treatment of his new mate.

The victim states the detained figure first punched him, then used the shovel to strike him twice in the back of the head before fleeing the area. Using relayed information, authorities stopped someone matching the reported offender’s description and arrested 40-year-old Samuel Edwards on the 2100 block of Sigel Street after a positive identification, Tolliver said. The complainant received transport to Methodist Hospital, where, in addition to needing help for a laceration to the back of his head, he revealed he could not feel his legs. This prompted a transfer to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Police charged Edwards, of the same block where they apprehended him, with possession of an instrument of crime, recklessly endangering another person and two counts of assault. He awaits a May 13 hearing and had not posted his $50,000 bail as of press time.
