Authorities are searching for a man who tried to steal a vehicle in Whitman.

At 2:40 p.m., police responded to a report of a robbery from Uncle Oogie’s, 36 Snyder Ave., and learned from a witness that through video surveillance, she observed the offender entering the complainant’s 1998 Dodge parked in the rear of the business, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. She and the owner went to confront the budding criminal and during their interaction, the unknown individual began to drive the vehicle, hitting the witness in doing so.

The complainant held on to the automobile for three blocks, falling off when it made contact with a fire hydrant. After striking the object, the at-large male fled on foot, last seen in the area of Second and Durfor streets. The complainant received transport to Hahnemann Hospital, where personnel listed him in stable condition. The witness, who complained of minor scrapes and bruises, described the aggressor as black, 5-foot-7 and around 40; having a stocky build; and wearing a white baseball cap, blue jeans and a green and white polo shirt.
