The great playoff chase

Every August, when the Neumann-Goretti girls’ soccer program opens camp, coach Jim McBride and his players set the Catholic League playoffs as a goal. Dating back to its days as the all girls’ school at 10th and Moore streets, the team has always fallen short of its target.

Finally, on Tuesday afternoon, Neumann-Goretti made history with its opening-round playoff game against Little Flower. By finishing fourth in the Blue Division, the Saints earned the home field advantage at Seventh and Bigler streets.

McBride and his 5-6-2 squad were ecstatic about making the postseason.

"I think it’s great for the kids," he said prior to the 4-0 defeat. "I think it gives them a bit of pride."

The Saints boys’ soccer squad also qualified, but lost 7-0 in Monday’s playoff opener at Conwell-Egan.

Friday, the Southern Rams football team celebrated after clinching the Public League Blue Class AAAA title with a 4-0 mark. The boys from Broad Street and Snyder Avenue sealed its postseason fate following a 36-0 victory over Edison. Tomorrow afternoon, Southern travels to the Northeast to face Washington, who finished second in the Red Division with a 3-1 mark. Kickoff is at 3.

The weekend of concerts and games in South Philly gets off to an early start at 10th and Bigler streets at 11 Saturday morning, well before the Phillies and Yankees toss out the first pitch in Game 3 of the World Series. First up, the Bok football team attempts to repeat as the Public League Class AA champs with a home tilt against Imhotep Charter. The Wildcats, based at Eighth and Mifflin streets, took the regular-season meeting, 30-0. The winner advances to next week’s District 12 semifinals.

At 3, the Neumann-Goretti football team looks to close out its league schedule on a winning note against Lansdale Catholic. With both schools sitting at 0-3, besides team pride, the winner earns the division’s final playoff spot.
