An East Passyunk Crossing business owner has had problems with teens taking merchandise without paying.

The 58-year-old owner was inside his newsstand, 1601 S. Broad St., at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday when a few teens exited the eastern Tasker Street staircase of the Broad Street Line’s Tasker-Morris station, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. One of the teens snatched $5 worth of chips bags and candy bars from the display and walked away.

The owner exited the stand and grabbed the teen’s arm, Tolliver said. The teen punched the man in the right side of his face and said, “I’ll be back tomorrow,” as he walked away heading north on Broad and west on Dickinson Street.

The owner sustained a cut and swelling to his right cheek, but denied medical treatment, Tolliver said.

Tuesday’s incident was the most recent in a series of thefts that have occurred at the stand between 2:15 and 3:30 p.m. by teens, Tolliver said.

The thief was described as black with a dark complexion, age 17, 5-foot-4, thin; having dark brown curly hair; and wearing a dark-colored jacket, dark blue jeans and a brown school bag over his shoulder.
