A teen averted a jury trial by pleading guilty to third-degree murder Monday.

Renardo Amador will be behind bars for 17-and-a-half to 40 years after he pled guilty to third-degree murder of a Grays Ferry man, according to court records. The charge was lowered from second-degree Sept. 7. As a part of the plea agreement, all other charges, including theft and firearm violations, were dropped.

The 18-year-old admitted to shooting 67-year-old Harvey Marinoff in the head and back in Marinoff’s basement on the 1600 block of South Bailey Street at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 5, 2010, according to police.

Amador is believed to have known the man and stole his car and cell phone. Police arrested him the following night.
