A West Passyunk man is in custody for a slaying of a man on his birthday.

Tariq D. Jenkins, 23, of the 2000 block of Mifflin Street, turned himself in to police Aug. 1, Officer Jill Russell of the Police Public Affairs Unit said.

He was charged with murder, possession of an instrument of crime and two firearm violations — carrying in public and without a license, according to court records. He was transferred from Montgomery County where he was imprisoned for violating parole for two 2010 Montgomery County retail theft charges that he pled guilty to last year.

Jenkins allegedly killed Cornelius Riggs, 31, of the 1600 block of Wharton Street, after firing multiple gunshots to his chest on the 1200 block of South 15th Street at 2:05 a.m. June 16, according to police.
