A Hawthorne man remains in jail on $2 million bail after robbing a woman and throwing her in the subway tracks in Center City.
While waiting for the Broad Street Spur at Eighth and Race streets, a 23-year-old sat on a bench beside William Clark, 36, whose last known address is on the 1300 block of Fitzwater Street, at 3:20 p.m. Jan. 15, according to police. Clark is believed to have asked her what time the train was coming and for a lighter.
She handed him hers, which he later returned, Tolliber said. As she placed her lighter back in her coat, Clark allegedly grabbed her neck and punched her in the head a few times. The victim screamed she did not have anything, so Clark suppposedly grabbed her legs, dragged her to the end of the platform and tossed her into the tracks. He is believed to have picked up her phone, which fell out of her pocket, and fled.
The victim suffered minor injuries to her head and face, police said.
SEPTA police spotted Clark Jan. 17 and believed he matched the description of the offender wanted for the assault two days prior, according to police. He allegedly refused to cooperate and resisted arrest.
He was wearing the same jacket as he did during the earlier robbery and also had the victim’s cell phone in his possession, police said.
Clark was charged with aggravated assault, robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person, according to court records. He pled guilty to nine Center City robberies in 1996.
