A woman who assaulted her teenage daughter, mother and a few passers-by pled guilty last week.

Monique Smith’s open guilty plea entered May 29 will result in Common Pleas Court Judge Denis P. Cohen sentencing her Sept. 17.

Her plea admits guilt in the aggravated assault of her teenage daughter, her mother and two others, as well as possession of an instrument of crime and endangering the welfare of a child, according to court records.

Smith, 32, whose court records indicate mental health issues, barricaded herself in her home on the 1000 block of Ritner Street after attacking her then-14-year-old daughter at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 15. When Smith’s then-50-year-old mother arrived at the home, she punctured her matriarch’s left arm with an object. She continued to stab passers-by who offered aid to the family, including a 69-year-old man and 32-year-old woman.

“We don’t really know what totally set her off,” Assistant District Attorney James Carpenter said. “Obviously, it was unacceptable.”

Smith kept authorities out of the home for about 45 minutes, but SWAT then retrieved her and her 6- and 4-year-old sons from the dwelling.

Smith faces up to 50 to 100 years in jail, with a minimum of two to four years for assaulting a person older than 60, Carpenter said. However, sentencing guidelines place her within 54 to 74 months for one stabbing.

“It’s hard to predict what the judge will do,” he said.
