The Ss. Neumann-Goretti boys’ basketball team, 1736 S. 10th St., is gearing up for tomorrow’s 7:30 p.m. PIAA AAA quarterfinal contest against Holy Ghost Prep at Norristown Area High School. A victory would put the East Passyunk Crossing squad just three wins shy of the targeted treasure: A third straight state crown. The two semifinals will take place Tuesday with the two remaining squads advancing to the March 23 championship game at Penn State University’s Bryce Jordan Center.

The 25-3 Saints advanced by knocking off York Suburban, 89-52, in Tuesday’s second-round action, and Greencastle-Antrim, 81-47, in Friday’s opener. Senior Derrick Stewart, 23 points and 13 rebounds, took top scoring honors in the most recent victory. Friday, Junior John Davis led the winning effort with 21 points and 15 rebounds while sophomore Ja’Quan Newton and Stewart chipped in 13 apiece.

The Neumann-Goretti and Prep Charter girls’ basketball team, 1928 Point Breeze Ave., also enjoyable favorable results in their respective AAA openers. The Saints 49-40 victory over Nazareth Academy Saturday also marked the squad’s 19th triumph of the season. Senior Maureen Fiocca led all scorers with 16 points while classmate Tamira Laws grabbed 14 rebounds. The Catholic League squad was back in action last night at Royersford’s Spring-Ford High School against 27-1 District 11 top seed Allentown Central Catholic, which started after press time.

The 25-3 Lady Huskies’ second-round tilt was against Bethlehem Catholic, also last night at Royersford. Prep Charter, who began the postseason with Public League and City crowns, opened the state bracket with Saturday’s lopsided 70-46 decision over Susquehanna Township. Senior Kahleah Copper was once again too much for the opposition as she finished with 26 points and 18 rebounds. Sophomore Indiah Cauley added eight points and 10 rebounds.

The winning squads are preparing for Saturday’s quarterfinal action.
