The U.S. Marshal Service is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the shooter’s arrest.

The 30-year-old woman was out with relatives when her 11-year-old babysitter called her at 12:20 a.m. Sept. 8 and said her ex-boyfriend, Bernard Steven Gause, 35, allegedly was knocking on the door to her home on the 1300 block of South Hollywood Street. The woman told the girl not to let Gause in, but to inform him she is not home and has a restraining order against him.

She returned to her residence an hour later. As she parked her vehicle, Gause is believed to have pulled up right next to her, preventing her from exiting. He supposedly said he wanted to talk about getting his family back.

Then he allegedly saw the woman’s 34-year-old significant other walk out of the home, asked, “Who is that?” and pointed a black handgun at him. The man retreated inside and Gause allegedly redirected his aim at his former girlfriend. He is believed to have fired repeatedly from two feet away, striking her four times in her lower back, three times in her right arm and once in the left side of her chest, and continued to pull the trigger even after the gun emptied.

Gause fled in a black sedan north on Hollywood and east on Wharton Street.

The wounded woman was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in stable condition where she positively identified Gause as her shooter. An arrest warrant has been issued for Gause, whose last known address is on the 400 block of West Cortland Street.

Gause previously spent time in jail for a 1996 simple assault and a ’98 aggravated assault in North Philly, according to court records.
