Primo pride

If a person listened to Philadelphia sports talk radio the past few years, it would be impossible to miss personality Anthony Gargano bellow the words “It’s not just a hoagie, it’s a Primo.” While outsiders may not understand Gargano’s exclamation, residents south of City Hall know the saying by heart. This is why PrimoHoagies has been a perennial Readers’ Choice winner for hoagie.

Not only has the original Marconi establishment received multiple accolades but it has remained a fixture in this area since first opening more than 20 years ago. Manager Audrey Neigre points to high quality ingredients as helpers in making the shop located at 1528 W. Ritner St. so successful.

“We always use the best meats and cheeses, and the best (condiments), we always make sure everything is fresh,” she said.

Whether patrons are ripping into a spicy turkey or Italian diablo or the robust Nonna’s veggie, they can taste the fine fixtures that Neigre speaks of and know they are dining on South Philadelphia finest hoagie.

To continue their long-standing tradition of being the best hoagie in South Philadelphia, she focuses on a welcoming atmosphere and stellar service.

“I run the downstairs area with another family member that is with me, [and] we try to give you the best service and talk to everyone that comes in,” she said. “We make sure they feel like part of the family because they are.”

Pastaficio Homemade Pasta Co. piled on the goodness in second place, with Chickie’s Deli and Lil Nick’s splitting third.
