A Hawthorne pharmacist was sentenced to a decade in prison for illegal drug sales that totaled more than $1 billion.

Lawrence Young, 70, of Cherry Hill, N.J., was convicted of one count of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and three counts of distribution of controlled substances Dec. 3, 2009 and sentenced to 10 years behind bars July 6, according to court records. Lawrence filled prescriptions such as oxycodone, fentanyl, hydrocodone, alprazolam and promethazine with Codeine for drug dealers and addicts at his business — Young’s Pharmacy, 1306-08 South St. — between ’01 and ’06. As a part of these transactions, Young received cash, tips and lunches. To prevent his discovery, he set a cap for fraudulent prescriptions he would fill each day. Joseph L. Borkson pled guilty to issuing the invalid prescriptions and was sentenced to five years in jail in September.

In addition to his jail sentence that is set to begin by noon Aug. 8, Young has to pay a $400,000 fine and serve three years of supervised release and a special assessment of $400, as well as $1,270,246 in forfeiture, according to court records. Young appealed the sentence Monday.
