Perilous purse-snatching

A man tried to come to his wife’s aid as she was being robbed Saturday.

A 62-year-old woman was headed northbound on the 700 block of South Sixth Street with her 68-year-old husband a few steps ahead when an unknown man grabbed her purse at 8 p.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said The pair struggled, but the man knocked her to the ground, causing her to cut her hand and scrape her forehead.

She screamed for help, which alerted her husband of the commotion occurring behind him, Tolliver said. He backtracked to assist his spouse, but the thief ran southbound on Sixth and eastbound on Fitzwater Street with her bag that contained $200, a cell phone and her ID.

The offender was described as white, in his 20s, 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10; having black hair and wearing a dark-colored, possibly leather, jacket, dark-colored pants and a dark-colored bandana.
