A former parochial vicar at Stella Maris Church accused of molestation has accepted a supervised life of prayer and penance.

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput has found Monsignor George J. Mazzotta “unsuitable for ministry following a substantiated allegation,” according to an Archdiocese of Philadelphia press release issued Sunday.

Two years ago, Mazzotta, who was ordained in 1966, was accused of sexually assaulting a minor 40 years prior. Thirty-nine years before the 2010 allegation, the 73-year-old was assigned to Epiphany of Our Lord and St. Maria Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., from 1971 to ’76. He also served at St. Gabriel, 29th and Dickinson streets, from ’76 to ’78 and Stella Maris from 2008 until he was relieved of his duties in ’10.

The update also was made Sunday at Stella Maris. Mazzotta will remain at Villa St. Joseph, a Darby home for retired priests.

Counselors are available at Stella Maris, as well as through the archdiocese’s Victim Assistance Office at 888-800-8780 or philavac@adphila.org.
