The George C. Platt Memorial Bridge, which carries an average of 56,000 vehicles a day, is undergoing long-term lane closures into next week to prepare for “much needed repairs” on the 61-year-old structure, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Construction crews began working Monday night and will continue through Tuesday placing concrete barriers on the bridge to restrict eastbound and westbound traffic from two lanes to one, in order to adhere to PennDOT’s $43 million bridge-improvement project that will be ongoing through June 2014.

In order for construction crews to safely set the concrete barriers in place, Platt Bridge will be closed and detoured during the overnight operation. A schedule has been provided for drivers to plan ahead for the remaining days of construction. The Westbound Platt Bridge will be closed 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Today, Monday and Tuesday.

Detour signs will be intact to direct drivers around the bridge during the overnight closures, but PennDOT advises motorists to use alternate routes or plan for delays.
