Not a toss up

When looking for fresh, hot pizza in South Philly, look no further. With more than two dozen toppings plus many possible combinations, City Pizza’s two locations — 100 Snyder Ave. and 2700 S. 16th St. — have been awarded top destinations for pizza toppings.

“It is about our consistency and the high quality of our ingredients,” Whitman location owner Frank Andrew said. “We keep things consistent over time. There is no need to change our recipe.”

When ordering a topping, the toughest choice one may face is which one to try first. The best-selling pizza at Andrew’s location is the pizzaz pizza, which is a combination of mozzarella, American, and cheddar cheeses, fresh tomatoes and a choice of roasted or hot peppers.

“We have about 25 different toppings, but you can make, twist and turn any of those toppings to make your own combination,” Bob Petril, owner of the Marconi location, said. “I would say our best-selling pizza is the old-school pepperoni pizza, although people are getting a lot more exotic pizzas these days with different vegetable and meat combinations.”

Other specialty pies include the bacon cheddar cheeseburger, Hawaiian, meat lovers, breakfast and even a smothered fry pizza, which aside from an abundance of french fries, includes three different types of cheese, bacon and ranch dressing.

Uncle Oogie’s Pizzeria and Not Just Pizza garnished the second and third spots, respectively.
