No brotherly love

A verbal dispute between brothers got physical when the older allegedly beat the younger with a shovel Saturday.

The argument began inside their home when Terrence Randall, 24, of the 2000 block of Ellsworth Street, allegedly threw a diaper and its box at his 15-year-old sibling at 9:40 p.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Randall then allegedly slapped the teen, who struck back. A 21-year-old sister tried to intervene, but Randall had left the house.

When the teen followed him, Randall allegedly picked up a shovel and hit his brother several times in the face, left arm and back. The teen was taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Tolliver said.

Police pinpointed Randall to the 1400 block of Point Breeze Avenue, but he ran north to the 2100 block of Sears Street. When police tried to arrest him there, Randall allegedly fought back, swinging his arms and elbowing an officer in the eye.

He was taken into custody and charged with two counts of aggravated assault for the incident with his brother and the officer, as well as resisting arrest, Tolliver said.

Giving chase

A woman was threatened about telling she was mugged, but reported it to a group of men who tried to chase down the perpetrators with no luck.

Approached from behind at 4:50 p.m. Sunday, the 21-year-old woman was held at gunpoint by two men who told her to drop her purse, which she did on the 1600 block of Ellsworth Street, and began to walk away, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. After telling a group of males around the corner what had happened, the muggers fled on foot in an unknown direction when they realized they were being chased, Tolliver said. As they bolted, the two dropped the woman’s purse, which the victim recovered.

The offenders were described as black and ages 15 to 16; the first was 5-foot-7 with a medium complexion and wearing a blue sweatshirt, jeans and a holster; the second was 5-foot-8 with close-cropped hair, wearing a white sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Charged with attempted murder

Two men — ages 39 and 52 — drove their 1996 Chevy van to 17th Police District headquarters, 20th and Federal streets, at 5:18 a.m. Sunday, claiming its gunshot holes were courtesy of someone one of them knew.

Sietta Lindsay, the mother of the 39-year-old’s child; John Lindsay, her brother; and Eric Lewis, her boyfriend, allegedly shot at the van from a green Buick LeSabre while driving on the 1300 block of South 20th Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said.

Police found the Buick at 12th and Porter streets with John Lindsay, 28, of the 2500 block of Vine Street, behind the wheel. He was arrested at the scene.

Sietta Lindsay, 26, of the 2500 block of Reese Street, was arrested at her home, where a search of revealed guns. Lewis, 38, of the 900 block of South Fourth Street, came to the house looking for Lindsay and also was taken into custody, Tolliver said.

The three were charged with attempted murder, conspiracy, aggravated assault and related charges. Police are not yet sure if the recovered guns were the ones used in the alleged attack.

Unnecessary roughness

Two cousins were heldup — and brutally attacked, though one offered to give up his goods to the gunman — on the 2100 block of St. Albans Street early Saturday.

At about 3 a.m., the mugger pointed a handgun at the 22-year-old and ordered him to get facedown on the ground, then pistol-whipped him and kicked him in the head, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The offender removed the man’s brown wallet with his ID, as well as $40 from his back pants’ pocket.

His 23-year-old cousin offered to give the offender his cellphone and wallet, but the gunman ordered him to the ground, as well, and struck him with the weapon on the right side of his head — leaving him a laceration that would require three staples to close — and kicked him in his face. The mugger took the man’s wallet from his back pocket, which contained his ID, a debit card and $40.

The suspect fled on foot, going east on St. Albans, Tolliver said.

Police transported the cousins to Methodist Hospital.

The perpetrator was described as a black male with a short haircut, age 20 to 25, 5-foot-8, 180 pounds and wearing a dark color jacket.

Gunpoint mugging

A 21-year-old was robbed at gunpoint of his electronics Saturday night on the 1900 block of Fitzwater Street.

The suspect pointed a silver handgun at the man at 6:15 p.m. and demanded money, but happily helped himself to the man’s wallet from his back pants’ pocket and his green messenger bag that contained his iPod and BlackBerry, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Not satisfied, the mugger struck the man in the head and took his cellphone from his front pants’ pocket.

The perpetrator fled on foot, going east on Fitzwater and then south on the 700 block of Martin Street, Tolliver said.

The victim was taken to Methodist Hospital and treated for a laceration to the back of his head.

The offender was described as black, in his mid-20s, 5-foot-10 to 6 foot with a medium build and complexion, cleanshaven and wearing a gold jacket with fur around the collar and dark jeans.

Subway beating suspect pleads guilty

A North Philadelphia teen pled guilty to attacking and ultimately killing a South Philadelphia man in a SEPTA subway station last year.

Rasheem Bell, 17, of the 4700 block of Tampa Street, copped to third-degree murder and criminal conspiracy Feb. 24. His sentencing is scheduled for April 7.

Bell, along with four other Simon Gratz High School students, were charged with punching Sean Conroy, of the 1900 block of South 10th Street, multiple times at the 13th Street Station on the Market-Frankford Line at about 3 p.m. March 26. The Center City Starbucks manager had a fatal asthma attack triggered by the blunt force to his head, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. Conroy, 36, died at an area hospital following the confrontation.

Also charged in the attack were 17-year-old North Philadelphia residents Kinta Stanton of the 4900 block of North Smedley Street; Arthur Alston of the 800 block of West Fisher Avenue; Nashir Fisher of the 3500 block of North Marvine Street; and Ameer Best of the 2000 block of North 24th Street.

The closers

The end may be in sight for the trial of state Sen. Vincent Fumo, as the jury is expected to begin deliberations this week.

More than four months since opening arguments, the trial’s closings began last Monday with Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert A. Zauzmer and co-defense attorney Edwin J. Jacobs Jr. After snow postponed the trial Monday, Fumo’s defense attorney, Dennis J. Cogan, gave his closing remarks yesterday.

At press time, Zauzmer was wrapping up his rebuttal, a source with the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

U.S. District Judge Ronald L. Buckwalter was expected to instruct the jury yesterday, as well, the source added. The case was expected to go to the jury after press time.

Fumo was indicted Feb. 6, 2008, and charged with 139 counts of fraud, tax evasion and corruption for allegedly defrauding the state Senate, Independence Seaport Museum, 211 S. Columbus Blvd., and the nonprofit Citizens Alliance for Better Neighborhoods, 1131-1137 Wharton St. The ex-senator’s co-defendant is former Citizens’ Alliance Executive Director Ruth Arnao, who is charged with 45 counts of mail and wire fraud, obstruction of justice and filing a false tax return.
