One man is dead and his alleged killer, who is believed to have fired shots at police too, is in custody.

Officers from the 17th District were patrolling Grays Ferry around 8:37 p.m. Sept. 28 due to a homicide that occurred 15 minutes earlier, Lt. Ray Evers of the Police Public Affairs Unit said.

While driving south on 1500 block of South Patton Street, the officers heard gunshots and allegedly saw Rahmik Beckett, 22, of the 1500 block of South Corlies Street, standing over Kevin Jones, 24, of the 1500 block of South 31st Street, shooting, Evers said. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.

Beckett and one of the officers then allegedly swapped gunfire, Evers said. As Beckett ran north on 32nd Street, he is believed to have turned and fired at the cop initiating another round of bullets before tossing his weapon under a parked car and fleeing. Police nabbed him at 32nd and Dickinson streets as he attempted to enter a vehicle. Beckett suffered a graze wound to the neck and was listed in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania at press time.

An 18-year-old woman was caught in the crossfire while standing at Patton and Tasker, Evers said. Beckett’s bullet allegedly struck her in the jaw.

Beckett was charged with three counts of simple assault and attempted murder; two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer and firearm violations; one count of murder and related offenses.
