Knifed in fight

A 32-year-old was stabbed five times in the stomach by a stranger with whom he got into a fight Sunday.

The victim was on the 1500 block of South Marshall Street at about 4:30 a.m. when things got physical with several men, one of whom pulled a blade and used it, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said.

The victim fled on foot to the 700 block of Tasker Street, where he collapsed and a passerby called police. A medic transported the wounded man to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he was immediately taken into surgery. He was in critical but stable condition at press time, Tolliver said.

Sentenced for gun on plane

A former resident from Ringgold Street who now resides in Arizona was sentenced Monday in federal court for bringing a concealed weapon on an aircraft June 4.

Damien Young, 29, received five years probation, including eight weekends in community confinement; 75 hours of community service; and a $1,000 fine, according to court records.

Young, an airline employee, and Roshid Milledge, 38, his former roommate, were charged with boarding an aircraft while carrying a concealed, dangerous weapon, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office indictment.

Milledge’s sentencing is tomorrow.

Young, who was charged with bringing the Smith & Wesson 9mm semi-automatic on U.S. Airways flight 1195, also had to forfeit the firearm officials said he had in his carryon for the flight scheduled to leave Philadelphia International Airport for Arizona at about 7 a.m. Prior to boarding, the U.S. Airways customer service representative who also was his roommate allegedly brought a similar bag through employee security and swapped the luggage with Young outside Gate C-28. Young, who is the registered owner of the weapon and has a permit to carry the firearm, was apprehended prior to takeoff.

Charged with attempted murder

Shortly after a 16-year-old was gunned down on the 1900 block of Bonsall Street, patrol officers arrested a man inside a local playground. Leroy Brown, 19, from the 2200 block of McClellan Street, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, possession of an instrument of crime and three firearms violations — including a former convict in possession, no license and carrying on the street.

At about 3:10 a.m. Oct. 21, the victim was standing outside a dwelling on Bonsall when Brown allegedly called "Yo" from behind. When the teen did not turn around, he heard gunshots ring out and started to run, at which time he felt a burning sensation in the back of his left leg and realized he had taken a bullet, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detectives said. The 16-year-old took off and called police, who took him to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in stable condition.

Officers on patrol in the area of Bonsall and McKean streets heard the gunfire and saw Brown quickly pedaling his red bike away from Bonsall. Cops chased Brown through a playground on the 2400 block of Jackson Street, where they allegedly saw him discard a black revolver. Brown was nabbed inside the playground, where a black .357 magnum Taurus with a brown handle, loaded with six spent casings, was recovered by police. A check into the firearm revealed it was stolen, Tolliver said.

A gray 2005 Chevrolet on the block where the teen was hit had a bullet hole in its front bumper; police estimated the damage at about $500.

Shot in the foot

While riding his bike on the 1900 block of South Hemberger Street, a 50-year-old felt pain in his left foot, looked down and noticed he was shot in the heel.

After the 10:15 p.m. Sunday incident, in which the victim told police he did not see the offender, Medic 37 took the man to HUP in stable condition while police recovered various ballistics evidence from the scene, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detectives said.

Greedy thieves

After a 17-year-old complied with a mugger’s request, he was ordered to get on his knees while the perpetrator pressed a gun to the back of his head and checked out the victim’s pockets.

The incident happened at about 4 a.m. Saturday after the teen exited a SEPTA bus at Broad and South streets and was walking on the 1200 block of Catharine Street. Two men walked up behind him and one asked for a cigarette. The victim said he didn’t have one and walked away only to be pursued by the two a bit further, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detectives said. When the victim turned to look behind him, one offender pointed a black handgun at him and demanded his things as his accomplice stood a few feet away as lookout.

The victim surrendered his Metro PCS cellphone valued at $180 and a TransPass valued at $21. Evidently unsatisfied with the loot, the armed man told the victim to get down and went through his pockets. After coming up empty, the culprit and his lookout took off on foot on Catharine, heading toward 11th Street.

The teen was unharmed in the mugging and the offenders were described as black; the gunman was described as in his early 20s, about 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds with an average build, partial beard and wearing a black skull cap, a black hooded sweatshirt, brown cargo pants and black shoes; the lookout was described as in his late teens, about 6 foot and 160 pounds with a light complexion, thin build and wearing a plaid shirt, brown pants, black shoes and a black skull cap.

Gang mugging

A 26-year-old was robbed by about 10 men — about ages 15 to 18 — while walking in the area of the 700 block of Oregon Avenue last Friday.

One of the gang pulled a knife and demanded the victim’s money at about 11:30 p.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detectives said. After taking the victim’s Metro PCS cellphone and $500, the offenders took off on foot in an unknown direction.

The victim was not injured in the incident.

Fumo pal sentenced

A crony of former state Sen. Vince Fumo pleaded guilty Oct. 19 to conspiracy to commit mail fraud stemming from a phony contract for the Pennsylvania Senate Democratic Appropriations Committee that paid him $287,000, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office indictment memo.

S. Michael Palermo, 69, was on Fumo’s payroll from 1999 to 2004 and prosecutors said Palermo provided little to no actual work in connection to the committee. The relationship between the men dates back to the early ’70s when Palermo worked as an aide for Fumo when he served as director of a state agency, and again as his chief of staff in Fumo’s legislative district office in Philadelphia, the indictment memo said.

Palermo will be sentenced Jan. 22.

Aug. 31, Fumo began serving a 55-month prison term in Kentucky after being convicted in March of 137 counts of fraud, tax evasion and obstruction of justice.
