Mugging turned burglary

A man was robbed near his Pennsport home and then the offenders forced their way inside his adobe when they realized he resided nearby Monday.

A 67-year-old parked his vehicle on the corner of South Howard and Wharton streets at 3:40 a.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When he hopped out of the car, a man armed with a dark-colored revolver pointed the firearm at him and told him not to move as two other men joined him from the other side of Wharton.

The trio pushed him against the automobile and asked him about money at which time, the elderly man handed over $300, Tolliver said. They made him throw his keys to the ground and one of the men said, “he lives here. He has money in the house,” so the group pushed him inside his home.

Two of the men scrimmaged through the second and third stories of the home while the third — armed with a shotgun — monitored the homeowner on the ground floor and tried to bind his hands with wire ties, Tolliver said. After scouring the home and car, the trio fled on foot with $600 total and the man’s keys before entering a white van or SUV headed south on Front Street. The man’s 61-year-old wife was asleep in the home, but the couple was unharmed, Tolliver said.

The offender with the shotgun was described as black with a dark complexion, age 30 to 35, 220 to 240 pounds, unshaven, with short hair and wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. The other two were described as age 30 to 35, thin and wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. One of the latter also was sporting a red baseball cap.
