Mixed with good will

""For some, a move to New York might represent the ultimate step on the ladder of success. But for Jenelle Harriff, a former resident of the 1800 block of South 13th Street, it’s a chance for her to brag about the togetherness of South Philadelphia.

Harriff has worked in town and county government since age 16, when she became involved in voting and elections. Seven years later, she relocated here from Rochester, N.Y., for a managerial position.

“After a move, I always felt disconnected,” Harriff said.

The first thing she did after her arrival was to seek out her local civic association.

“It’s a way to meet people and get involved and really put the roots down,” Harriff said.

Soon, she brought a unique sense of comfort to the East Passyunk Crossing Civic Assocation’s monthly meetings by bringing homemade treats.

Over the years, her community efforts have expanded to include outreach to students and local schools by encouraging educators to buy fresh and local foods for cafeterias. Others also have reaped the benefits of Harriff’s passion for baking through her regular donations to Ss. Neumann-Goretti High, 1736 S. 10th St., fundraisers.

“My favorite memory is of how others have helped me,” Harriff said. “I love that camaraderie.”
