It is widely known that it is always sunny in Philadelphia, and now Philadelphians are giving thanks for the summer’s sunshine.

The Kimmel Center will celebrate the start of the new season with the annual Summer Solstice Celebration noon Saturday to 2:30 a.m. Sunday. This event will host more than 14 hours of family friendly arts and entertainment featuring Philadelphia-based artists. Some of the activities, which will be located in various venues through out the Kimmel Center, 260 S. Broad St., include exhibits from the Philadelphia Zoo, dance performances and live music shows.

Joe Truglio, a drummer from 15th and Mifflin streets, will be in attendance for the celebration performing his first studio album “Past Life” with his group the Joe Truglio Trio 12:30 a.m. Sunday at the Rendell Room.

“The Summer Solstice will be exciting because of the scale of it. There will be so many different bands there. It’ll be a really good representation of the variety of musicians in Philly,” he said.

Truglio, a 2005 University of Arts graduate, has established himself as a prominent jazz musician and composer both nationally and internationally. He credits his success because of Philadelphia’s R&B influences.

“Philly has had a gigantic affect on me .. .you know, I met a lot of great muscians here. I hadn’t even started writing seriously before I came to Philadelphia,” the New York Native said.

Reef the Lost Cauze, a South Philly resident, will emcee a hip-hop show featuring DJ Caliph-NOW and DJ David Blakk at 1 a.m. Sunday while 11th-and-Tasker-Street resident Rennie Harris’ company RHAW will perform its hip-hop-style dances at Commonwealth Plaza 5:30 p.m. Saturday. SPR
