Police are seeking a suspect who swiped a gold-painted metal statue of Jesus from a crucifix on a Bella Vista’s church property.

A caretaker at St. Mary Magdalen de Pazzi Church, 714 Montrose St., which serves as a worship site for St. Paul’s Church, 808 S. Hutchinson St., reported that the 10-by-18-inch version of the holy figure was missing from the parish’s courtyard at 10:45 a.m. Aug. 22, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said.

A nearby neighbor relayed she heard a loud noise at 2:50 a.m., so she looked out of her window and saw a man headed west on Montrose and then north on Eighth Street carrying a shiny object, Tolliver said. The statue is valued at $1,000.

The offender was described as a man of an unknown race, tall, thin; having dark hair and wearing all black clothing.
