King Day of Service events

Monday marks the 16th annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service where thousands of volunteers will chip in to better their neighborhoods at dozens of Philadelphia events including about 30 locally.

In 1994, Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Harris Wofford and Georgia U.S. Rep. John Lewis turned a national holiday from a “day off” to a “day on.” The first Martin Luther King Day of Service came to Philadelphia two years later. A national record was set for the city when the 14th annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service witnessed 65,000 volunteers. The day brings communities together to better their neighborhoods.

Bella Vista

Waters Memorial AME Church, 609 S. Clifton St., will host a senior citizens’ breakfast followed by a short Martin Luther King Day skit 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

George W. Nebinger School, 601 Carpenter St., will hold Nebinger King Day of Service 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. where students, staff and community members will participate in activites that will improve community relations in the school and the surrounding neighborhood Also, an open panel discussion with the parents will communicate ways to improve parental invovlement and provide additional resources for the academic program.

Dickinson Narrows

George Washington School, 1198 S. Fifth St., is looking for volunteers to write library cards for books that have been donated to start a school library 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Girard Estate

Greater Philadelphia Cares will be accepting donations for its 15th annual Winter Coat Drive at Conestoga Bank, 21st Street and Passyunk Avenue, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Jan. 14.

Grays Ferry

Volunteers are encouraged to help clean up and renovate the existing after-school room at Vare Recreation Center, 2600 Morris St., 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Engine 47, 3031 Grays Ferry Ave., will offer complimentary blood pressure screenings and health information 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hawthorne

Greater Philadelphia Cares will be accepting donations for its 15th annual Winter Coat Drive at Conestoga Bank, 10th and Catharine streets, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Jan. 14.

Lower Moyamensing

Engine 49, 2600 S. 13th St., will be giving out fire and safety literature along with taking requests for smoke detectors 11 a.m. to noon at the Fels Community Center, 2407 S. Broad St.

City Year Greater Philadelphia will volunteer renovations to South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. by repainting classrooms and painting murals. NewCORE (New Conversation on Race and Ethnicity) will hold the Conversation of Kings: From Dream to Sacrifice at Southern 9:30 a.m. to noon. The latter event entails a meaningful multicultural, interfaith concurrent conversation with local leaders, civicly-engaged citizens, students and volunteers in partnership with Global Citizen and the School District of Philadelphia.

Marconi

Greater Philadelphia Cares will be accepting donations for its 15th annual Winter Coat Drive at Conestoga Bank, Broad and Porter streets, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Jan. 14.

Passyunk Square

Engine 10, 1357 S. 12th St., will distribute home safety checklists available in eight languages and perform an individual home safety inspection between Morris and Tasker streets and Sixth and Seventh streets 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Engine 3, 210 Washington Ave., will provide fire safety instructions for those in a home and school environment 1 to 3 p.m.

Greater Philadelphia Cares will be accepting donations for its 15th annual Winter Coat Drive at Conestoga Bank, 1833 E. Passyunk Ave., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Jan. 14.

Point Breeze

Engine 24, 1200 S. 20th St., will host a fire prevention and safety program 10 a.m. to noon at Zion A.M.E. Church, 21st and Tasker streets. Highlights of the program’s discussions will include home escape plans, smoke detector information and fire prevention literature.

Solid Rock Baptist Church, 1836 Federal St., will host a Martin Luther King Day of Service 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with festivities including a community graffiti cleanup, park and street cleanups between 21st and 22nd streets and Point Breeze Avenue and Federal Street and supermarket shopping for senior citizens in the community and a project that will include poems, speeches, the dance ministry and sing-a-longs.

The Philmont Nonprofit Development Center will host a presentation on the development of a community development corporation serving South Philadelphia’s underserved and at-risk population 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Consolation Baptist Church, 2400 Wharton St. Volunteers will conduct inventory of supplies and resources as well as organize, package and relocate material.

The American Legion of Henry Hill Post 385, 3130 Wharton St., will host an award ceremony for members of the community who have served year round 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1230 Point Breeze Ave.

South of South

Marian Anderson Recreation Center, 744 S. 17th St., will host the Marian Anderson King Day of Service to clean up the center 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Volunteers are needed for the soup kitchen ministry as well as painting and cleaning projects during Tindley Temple M.L.K. Day at Tindley Temple U.M.C., 750-762 S. Broad St., 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. World Communications Charter School, 750 S. Broad St. will join forces with Tindley providing aid in paint, clean up and food distribution for the soup kitchen.

Shiloh Baptist Church, 2040 Christian St., will hold its Day of Service, Day of Wholeness celebration with informational tables, discussions on topics such as health, legal issues, housing, home ownership, mortgage, finances and elderly care 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The United Way of Southeaster Pennsylvania will host Uniting the Dream: Honoring the Past, Nurturing the Present and Building Healthy Communities for the Future program 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Universal Companies, 800 S. 15th St. Girls Today Leaders Tomorrow, a United Way leadership program, will collaborate with the Christian Street YMCA, 1724 Christian St., to encompass the day’s inter-generational theme as well as instill healthy practices holistically in the volunteers.

West Passyunk

The Philadelphia Fire Department, Engine 60, Ladder 19, 2301 S. 24th St., will hold the King Day Clothing Collection Drive 10 a.m. to noon at St. John Neumann Place, 2600 Moore St.

City Year Greater Philadelphia will volunteer renovations to Edwin H. Vare Middle School, 2100 S. 24th St., 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. by repainting classrooms and painting murals.

Whitman

JCCs Stiffel Senior Center, 604 Porter St., is welcoming volunteers in their food pantry and lunch room to straighten out and clean the pantry, pack groceries and set tables 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
