Icing on the cupcakes

Chocolate ganache, oreo and red velvet cupcakes are just a few of the selections sitting in the display case at Potito’s, 1614 W. Ritner St. Many customers must’ve been very hungry when they saw best cupcakes on the ballot as the Girard Estate establishment has been delivered the top prize.

“To me, it’s one of the highest honors I can receive because it’s an award given to us by our customers,” owner/baker Matty Benigno said. “We are just happy to keep our Potito tradition going. We pride ourselves on quality customer service, and the variety that we do.”

The South Philly location, which is one of four with a fifth one opening in Wildwood Crest later this spring, is a family affair with Matty’s wife Cristina assisting with the ownership responsibilities of the baking operation that her parents, Carmen and Maria Potito, started in 1985. Antonio Potito, the 81-year-old father of the late Carmen, is the one who usually gets the daily baking process started as early as 5 a.m. every morning. There are many more names that belong on the thank-you list, but like an Oscar acceptance speech, Matty summed things up.

“I want to thank all of my employees because they are a very important part of our team,” he said.

Frangelli’s Bakery mixed a second-place batter while Termini’s made a tasty third-place appearance.
