A man accomplished scaring off two offenders during a heist but ended up hospitalized for his courage.

An unknown man armed with a small, silver revolver walked inside Koh Kong Grocery, 2233 S. Seventh St., announced a robbery and told everyone to get on the ground at 5:50 p.m. Monday, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. A 48-year-old and two 29-year-old female workers complied, but a 40-year-old male patron did not.

During a struggle between the customer and the gunman, the latter fired three shots at the former, striking his left leg and head although the bullet did not penetrate his skull, Tolliver said. Then the perpetrator fled empty-handed eastbound on Moyamensing Avenue while his lookout fled north on Seventh Street.

Police performed first aid and CPR on the victim before transporting him to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in critical but stable condition, Tolliver said.

Detailed descriptions of the offenders were not available at press time.
