Forging distress

A neighbor allegedly burglarized a Lower Moyamensing man’s home at least twice. Allegedly writing a stolen check out to himself led to his capture Saturday.

An 83-year-old man was asleep at 4 a.m. June 11 at his residence on the 2400 block of South Eighth Street when he awoke to allegedly find David Milano, 29, of the same block, in his room, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The man fled with $925 from the man’s wallet. A few hours later the victim was transported to the hospital for complications from medical treatment. Upon his return from the hospital 15 days later, he noticed two Samsung TVs, a Samsung Blu-ray player, two checkbooks and ID, with a total value of $3,000, also missing. It is unclear when the items were taken.

When he notified his bank of the missing checks, a representative informed him a $250 check made out to Milano was cashed June 18, Tolliver said.

The man reported another burglary at 1:56 a.m. July 23, Tolliver said. After falling asleep at 9 the night before, he awoke to find open dresser drawers and items, such as a filing cabinet and his pants he had on the previous day, misplaced. However, nothing was reported missing. There were no signs of forced entry in any of the break-ins.

Police arrested Milano, who was charged with two counts of burglary, criminal trespassing, theft and receiving stolen property and a count of forgery, at 9:45 a.m. Aug. 4 at South Detectives, Tolliver said.

Milano currently has two open cases, including a May 27 3rd District and a June 8 1st District retail theft, according to court records. He previously served time for a string of 4th District — now 3rd District — robberies in September 2001.
