A man punched his attacker in an attempted mugging that occurred as he made a early-morning trip to his auto to retrieve some items.

Walking through Lower Moyamensing to his vehicle, the 35-year-old reached 11th and Jackson streets at about 4 a.m. Jan. 27 when an unknown man pushed him to the ground from behind, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. As the victim turned around, he saw the man, who threatened to shoot if he didn’t give up some cash as he stood above him with his hands in his coat pockets.

When the man claimed he did not have any money on him, the suspect began to rummage through his pockets. The man punched the offender, which resulted in a brief struggle before the offender fled southbound on South 11th Street.

The man, who reported the crime Feb. 3, was unharmed and nothing was taken from him.

The suspect was described as white; age 18 to 21; 5-foot-7 with short, dark hair; stubble on his face; and wearing a dark puffy hooded coat and baggy pants.
