An attempted robbery resulted in a woman sustaining only minor injuries from her attacker.

While walking home on the 1600 block of South 13th Street at 1:43 a.m. Friday, a 21-year-old woman heard someone running behind her, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. She was on the front steps of a residence when a man grabbed her with one hand and tried to shove a white tank top in her mouth.

She smelled chemicals, but it was unclear if the odor came from the garment, Sgt. Gwen Bartlett of South Detectives said. She began to scream and kick at the man as he reached for her purse. During the struggle, the man fell off of the stoop and pulled her down with him. She continued to fight until the perpetrator fled south on 13th.

The woman was transported to Methodist Hospital with cuts to both legs and a broken left ring finger, Tolliver said.

The attacker was described as Latino with a dark complexion, in his early 20s, 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-9; having a medium build; and wearing all black clothing and a black baseball cap backwards.
