Fighting off summer hunger epidemic

Mayor Michael Nutter announced the commencement of the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger’s free summer meals program for low-income students Tuesday. Due to the 91,000 Philadelphia children who ate these summer meals last year, the program has proved itself mandatory for the physical and nutritional well-being of many children.

“Children should never have to worry about where their next meal is coming from,” Carey Morgan, the coalition’s executive director, said in a statement.

The program will exist at more than 1,000 sites in the city — about 50 of which are located in South Philadelphia including recreation centers, playgrounds, churches, schools and playstreets, which are one-way streets blocked off from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the summer to support a safe haven for playing.
