A man was stabbed during a fight while a Whitman man, who was later arrested, fired two shots to break it up Saturday.

A 33-year-old man was part of a fistfight that is believed to have been between Laotians and Cambodians at 8:33 p.m. on the 2300 block of South Seventh Street during a Cambodian New Year celebration, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. A 44-year-old grabbed him yanking him from the confrontation and noticed his abdomen was bleeding. Sopheap Kun, 21, of the 500 block of West Moyamensing Avenue, allegedly fired two shots toward the crowd and attempted to flee the scene, but police nabbed him.

The gun was registered to Kun, who also has a valid permit, Tolliver said. Kun, who was charged with recklessly endangering another person, allegedly told police someone in the crowd was threatening others with a knife, so he fired the shots in the air as a warning.

The man bleeding from his abdomen was transported to Methodist Hospital in critical condition for what was believed to be a gunshot wound, Tolliver said. Instead, doctors discovered it was a long, deep laceration.
