A man suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen in the Newbold/Point Breeze section succumbed to his injuries less than six hours later.

Police arrived on the 1300 block of South Mole Street for a reported shooting at 1:53 a.m. Tuesday when they located Saleem Murray, 23, of the 2100 block of Mifflin Street, who was shot, Officer Jill Russell of the Police Public Affairs Unit said.

He was transported to Jefferson University Hospital in critical condition, but was pronounced dead at 7:14 a.m., Russell said.

After three to four shots were fired, the offender, a black male, who was in his 20s and wearing black pants, white sneakers and no shirt, fled on foot east on Wharton Street, according to police. The motive was unknown at press time.
