After police knocked down the door to a Whitman home, officers found a son assaulting his father.

Authorities responded to a person screaming on the 400 block of Durfor Street at 7:08 p.m. Sunday, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Police forced their way into the residence through a locked front door and allegedly saw Yeary Chau, 30, of the same block, standing over his 58-year-old father with a knife in his hand.

Officers arrested Chau, who was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, terroristic threats and related offenses, according to court records. Chau’s bail, which had not been posted by press time, was set at $1 million.

His patriarch was unconscious with severe head trauma and bleeding profusely from his head, back and shoulders, Tolliver said. A medic unit transported him to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition.

It was unclear what prompted the attack.
