As a woman’s son tried to escape back inside his home during an altercation, her dog ran outside and was subsequently shot Friday.

The 37-year-old woman’s son had a verbal altercation with a few people on the block around 2:30 p.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Later, some of those same men were hanging out outside on the 2000 block of Dickinson Street again. The man left the house at 5:20 p.m. when the men tried to jump him.

The man ran back into the home and the family pit bull raced out of the house, Tolliver said. The man’s mother went outside to retrieve her dog, and Jerrow Rogers, 32, of the 2600 block of South Front Street, allegedly shot the dog three times. The pit bull yelped and retreated back inside the dwelling.

When the woman inquired why he shot the dog, he allegedly walked away, Tolliver said.

Police responded to the scene at 5:20 p.m. where they found the dog lying inside the home on the living room floor with wounds to its shoulder, Tolliver said.

Police recovered ballistic evidence on the block, but did not recover the gun. Police arrested Rogers, who was charged with cruelty to animals, possession of an instrument of crime and firearm violations. Rogers allegedly gave a formal statement to detectives at South Detectives, in which he admitted to killing the dog, Tolliver said

Rogers pled guilty to aggravated assault and firearm violations in 1998, according to court records.

The dog was transported to the Animal Care and Control Team Shelter, 111 W. Hunting Park Ave., for medical evaluation. However, it was euthanized due to the extent of its injuries, Liz Williamson, director of public relations for the Pennsylvania Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said.
