A man ended up sliced through a South Street-situated altercation Sunday.

At 2:15 a.m., the complainant was outside Wooley’s Bar, 430 South St., when a stranger approached him and asked for a cigarette, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Revealing he is not a smoker, the victim started to walk on the 600 block of East Passyunk Avenue, with the requester following him and accusing him of lying.

When the complainant neared the parking lot at 627 E. Passyunk Ave., the offender yelled “(Expletive) you; turn around.” When the individual complied, he saw the unknown man holding a knife in his left hand. He began running from a distance of 10 feet away and tried to stab his target in the face, Tolliver said.

The victim blocked the thrust and grabbed the attacker’s arm, but sustained a cut to his right thumb and middle finger. After a tussle, he was able to escape and ran for help, receiving assistance from a medic unit. He described the aggressor, who fled northbound toward South Street, as white, 30 years old and 6-foot-3; having a thin build, a scruffy beard and a light complexion; and wearing a forest green wool cap, a black wool coat with a hoodie underneath and blue denim pants with paint and drywall on them and a large hole on the right pant leg.
