Authorities were seeking Shekinah Williams, 28, of the 2100 block of Sears Street, since bullets allegedly from his gun took the life of Clarice Douglas, 45, and wounded another man on the 1500 block of South Corlies Street.

Williams was arrested on the 1600 block of South 16th Street at 5:15 a.m. Sunday, according to the Police Public Affairs Unit.

He was charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, possession of an instrument of crime and two firearm violations — failing to have a license and carrying a firearm in public, according to court records. Williams reported to his preliminary hearing at 1:14 a.m. Monday at which time his bail was set at $500,000. He was scheduled to return to court July 11.

However, upon returning to his cell at Center City’s Police Headquarters Detention Unit, Williams hanged himself with his T-shirt, according to police, and was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m.

Williams and Hakeem Burley, 23, of 27th Street and Snyder Avenue, allegedly engaged in an argument before the shoot-out between them ensued, according to police. The exchanged gunfire resulted in Williams allegedly wounding Douglas, a mother of five who was awaiting her youngest children’s return from school, in the back and head and Burley in his left arm and side. Police recovered Burley’s alleged .45 caliber handgun, which resulted in three firearm violations.

Burley is due in court July 19 for his preliminary hearing, according to court records.
