Advice Ann Catania received at St. Agnes Hospital, formerly 1930 S. Broad St., has brought her much success across the street at Ten Pennies, 1921 S. Broad St., voted the go-to florist.

“I was self-taught,” she said. “My mother was very creative, and I think I got her talent.”

Coworkers told her not to waste her talents working an office job. However, she was stuck on a name for her florist business when the wife of one of the doctors whom she worked with reminded her she was known for the 10 pennies she placed in her arrangements and her saying, “You’ll never be broke in life because you’ll start out with my 10 pennies,” which is something she still incorporates from time to time today.

“If I give some gift certificates away or if I do a show, I incorporate the 10 pennies, and tell them I’ll give them a 10-percent discount,” the 12th-and-Morris-streets native, who still resides locally, said.

In her 33rd year in business, she provides blooming buds, with roses being the most popular, for every occasion, including birthdays, anniversaries, bar mitzvahs and weddings. And the proof of her triumphs comes from repeat customers.

“They are proud to say that they sent something from Ten Pennies,” Catania said. “We’ve been around for so long, and the truth of the matter is that I’m very proud to have the clients that I do.”

Petals Florist and Decorators made arrangements in second, and Petal Pushers Florist and Decorators bloomed in third.
