Class action

Music filled the hall at Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School, 2407 and 2600 S. Broad St., and if one listened closely, he or she may realize the first-graders were singing in French. To some this may seem like a challenge, but to enrollees it is just another day of class. Lessons such as these earned the Lower Moyamensing and Marconi facilities the title of No. 1 South Philly school.

“The kids like it,” its founder Angela Corosanite said. “Just the way a child hears a great thing about their school — they are happy to hear that. I’m thrilled but I am more thrilled for my [school] children.”

Since 2000, it has been a school goal to continue traditional education and allow students to learn seven different arts programs. Upon reaching sixth grade, they choose classes based on their passion.

“From when I was a little girl, I grew up in a city that was rich in culture and arts,” Corosanite said. “I didn’t see it when my children went to school. There were very few opportunities. I always felt that it was my mission to be able to change that.”

Corosanite aims to make the school, which offers courses focused on specialties, such as visual arts, classical music, creative writing and ballet, feel like a second residence to the students.

“We wanted children to walk into the building and feel as though they are home,” Corosanite said.

St. Anthony of Padua Regional Catholic School earned second, and Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School studied third place.
