The complainant was walking along the 2000 block of South Darien Street at 3:30 a.m. Nov. 22 when an unknown male approached her from behind, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The figure placed a cloth soaked in an unidentified chemical on her face and shoved her to the ground.

The victim screamed for help and kept from passing out by turning her head to the side. A witness saw the reported attacker on top of the woman, yelled for him to stop and contacted authorities. The supposed aggressor fled the area, with police arriving shortly afterward and obtaining flash information.

A plainclothes officer observed the man on the 700 block of McClellan Street, Tolliver said, and stopped him for investigation. Following positive identification by the complainant and the witness, law enforcement agents arrested Fernando Tadeo-Canaveral, recovering evidence pertaining to the incident on his person. They charged the 22-year-old resident of the 2400 block of South Franklin Street with possession of an instrument of crime, assault, recklessly endangering another person, unauthorized administration of an intoxicant, kidnapping, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, attempted rape and resisting arrest. He had not posted his $2-million bail as of press time and awaits a Dec. 11 preliminary hearing.
