Police nabbed a Grays Ferry man for a Feb. 25 East Passyunk Crossing and Passyunk Square incident and then linked him to an earlier Lower Moyamensing holdup after police compared video surveillance.
Michael Allen, 41, of the 2600 block of Jackson Street, allegedly approached a 38-year-old man from behind on the 600 block of Fernon Street at 8 p.m. Feb. 25, Officer Christine O’Brien of the Police Public Affairs Unit said. He supposedly placed an object, which is believed to be a gun, to his back, so the man put his hands up. When Allen allegedly told him to put his hands down, he swiped $22 and cigarettes from the man’s pockets.
Twenty-three minutes later, Allen is believed to have entered Rite Aid, 1443 S. Seventh St., where he cut in line and demanded cash from a 22-year-old female employee’s register, O’Brien said. He had one of his hands in his pocket, but left empty-handed.
Police surveying the area spotted and arrested Allen at 8:30 p.m. on the 500 block of Fernon Street, O’Brien said.
As a result of surveillance footage, police believed the thief in a video from the Feb. 22 robbery of Los Charales Inc., 2100 S. Ninth St., also is the 41-year-old, according to the Public Affairs Unit.
Allen allegedly walked into the Lower Moyamensing corner store at 6:55 p.m. and said, “Give me all the money. I have a gun” to a 32-year-old employee, who opened the register, according to police.. Allen is believed to have grabbed $1,000 from the drawer and fled eastbound on Snyder Avenue. The employee followed him, but lost sight of the offender at Eighth Street.
Allen, who was charged with three counts of robbery simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and related offenses, was rearrested at 3 p.m . March 27 at South Detective Division, 2301 S. 24th St., for the later incident, according to court records. He previously has pled guilty to robberies in 1991, 2001 and ’09.
