Brown earns MVP nod

No matter how the University of Texas at El Paso women’s basketball team fares in the upcoming NCAA Division I women’s basketball tournament, Gloria Brown, a senior forward from 18th and McKean streets, knows she is leaving the college hardwood a champion.

The Neumann-Goretti, 1736 S. 10th St., grad was named the Conference USA Tournament MVP after helping her Miners defeat Tulane 69-65 in Saturday’s championship game. The victory came with an automatic ticket to the dance. UTEP (29-3) drew a No. 13 seed and will open tournament play against Penn State University.

Brown finished with a final line of 20 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Earlier this month, she repeated as Conference USA’s Sixth Player of the Year She came off the bench in all 29 games and finished among the league’s leaders for blocked shots (2.9), field-goal percentage (52.1), free-throw percentage (79.2), rebounding (8.8) and scoring (11.5).
