Bottom Dollar Food, the North Carolina-based discount grocer, opened 8 a.m. Thursday morning at 3000 Grays Ferry Ave. An early morning ribbon-cutting ceremony will kick off the opening-day festivities. The first 200 customers at the new location received a free Bottom Dollar Food reusable bag filled with groceries while additional customers received free reusable bags throughout the day. Former Philadelphia Eagle linebacker Bill Bergey greeted customers and signed autographs from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Second District Councilman Kenyatta Johnson and state Rep. Jordan Harris also were in attendance.

Bottom Dollar Food made $2,000 in charitable contributions to local nonprofits to support hunger relief efforts in Grays Ferry. A donation of $1,000 was made to Grace Tabernacle to support the organization’s hunger relief efforts. A matching donation was extended to St. Gabriel’s Parish Food Cupboard, which provides meals to more than 1,100 food insecure families annually.

The supermarket puts a strong focus on delivering low prices to customers with its ldquo; We Won’t Be Beat” guarantee and will beat any competitor’s price on the same item by a penny.

“At Bottom Dollar Food, we won’t be beat when it comes to delivering unbelievably low prices on fresh produce, quality meats, and the private and national brands that matter most to our customers,” Meg Ham, Bottom Dollar Food president, said. ldquo; We look forward to opening our doors in Grays Ferry this week and being a good partner in this community.”

The new location is expected to add more than 70 jobs to the local economy.

Bottom Dollar will serve as one of the anchors to the long-awaited commercial stretch along Grays Ferry Avenue. The previously vacant, 3.1-acre expanse was once home to the Grays Ferry Shopping Center that vanished more than four decades ago. Rite Aid also will be opening a new location at the site, but the opening date has yet to be announced.

Store hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays.
